What Is a Skid Steer?

A skid steer, sometimes called a skid loader or wheel loader, is a compact, multipurpose piece of construction equipment often used for digging. It is a versatile machine that has become a staple on many job sites due to its maneuverability, lightweight design, and ability to use a variety of attachments.

How It Works

The skid steer loader typically has either four wheels or two tracks. The front and back axles automatically synchronize their movements, but the driver can operate each side of the wheels or tracks separately. The wheels or tracks remain in a straight, fixed alignment and do not turn. To turn the device, the operator increases the speed of the wheels or tracks on one side, causing the machine to skid or drag across the ground as it rotates in the opposite direction. What It Is Used For

4. Snow Removal

Sizes of Skid Steers

Skid steer loaders are generally categorized into three sizes:

1. Small – Frame Skid Steers

Small – frame skid steers have a rated operating capacity of less than 1,750 pounds and produce under 50 horsepower. They are lightweight and highly maneuverable, making them ideal for working in tight spaces, such as small interior construction sites or landscaping projects with limited access.

2. Medium – Frame Skid Steers

Medium – frame skid steers have a rated operating capacity ranging from 1,750 to 2,200 pounds and 50 – 70 horsepower. They offer a good balance between power and maneuverability and are suitable for mid – sized construction projects, earthmoving, and snow removal.

3. Large – Frame Skid Steers

Large – frame skid steers have a rated operating capacity of over 2,200 pounds and more than 70 horsepower. They are designed for heavy – duty tasks, such as extensive grading, drilling, and large – scale demolition work.
